Kawartha Lakes cottage resorts with unique activities
Every summer, we make it our mission to stay at a different cottage resort in the Kawartha Lakes. There’s just something exciting about discovering a new place, a new stretch of lake to paddle, and a new activity to try.
While most cottage resorts in the region offer cozy accommodations and classic lakefront relaxation, we’ve learned that some have a unique draw—an experience that makes them stand out from the rest.
If you’re like us and love trying something new on vacation, you’ll appreciate these Kawartha Lakes cottage resorts with unique activities.
1. Take to the skies at Elmhirst’s Resort

Have you ever wanted to see the Kawarthas from above? At Elmhirst’s Resort you can book a sightseeing flight and soar over Rice Lake in a floatplane. It’s a breathtaking way to take in the region’s landscape while a knowledgeable pilot points out landmarks and shares a bit of local history. There’s room for just two guests alongside the pilot, making it an intimate and unforgettable experience. Trust me—this is one for the bucket list.
2. Learn about the wilderness with a naturalist at Viamede Resort

Do you love to learn about nature? Viamede Resort makes it easy with on-site naturalists who lead guided hikes, foraging walks, and even salamander searches. They’ll tell you where to hunt for turtles, provide tips on the best fishing spots, and are even available to lead guided paddles into areas that are known for wildlife sightings.
3. Savour authentic BBQ near Bellmere Winds Golf Resort

Food is a big part of any vacation. If you’re staying at Bellmere Winds Golf Resort, you’re in for a carnivores delight. Just a short drive away, Muddy’s Pit BBQ serves up mouthwatering slow-cooked meats prepared in their custom outdoor smokers.
Indulge in juicy pork back ribs, pulled pork, and beef brisket. Every bite serves up a taste of real, hardwood-smoked BBQ. There’s daily side dishes too, and if you go on a Sunday you can catch some live music too.
4. Test your problem-solving skills near Highland View Resort

Love a challenge? Head to Escape Maze, located a short drive from Highland View Resort. This entertainment facility offers a variety of activities, including indoor escape rooms and outdoor adventure games. It makes for a great group thing to do in the Kawartha Lakes that will be a lasting memory.
5. Feel the rush of waterskiing and tubing at Beachwood Resort

If you’ve always wanted to try waterskiing, Beachwood Resort is the perfect place. They offer boat rentals with a driver, plus all the gear you need to try waterskiing or tubing. Whether you’re skimming across the water on skis or bouncing over waves in a tube, this is an adrenaline-pumping activity that promises fun for all ages.
6. Reel in a catch on a guided fishing excursion at Eganridge Resort

Fishing is always more rewarding when you actually catch something, and that’s where a guide comes in handy. At Eganridge Resort, Golf Club & Spa you can book a guided fishing excursion on Sturgeon Lake, where a local expert will take you to the best fishing spots.
Whether you’re after bass, walleye, or muskie, having a guide can make all the difference between catching one and getting shut out. Whether you’re a fishing enthusiast (or just want to give it a try), this is a great way to spend some time out on the water.
Learn more on the Accommodations page of the Eganridge website, under “Things To Do.”
7. Hike or bike the Victoria Rail Trail at Cameron Lake Resort

A great way to explore a new place is on foot or a bike. At Cameron Lake Resort in the Kawartha Lakes you have direct access to the Victoria Rail Trail. This 55-km scenic trail runs from Lindsay to Kinmount, following an old railway line. It’s perfect for a leisurely bike ride or a peaceful hike. Take in the views and keep your eyes peeled as some previous visitors have reported spotting wildlife along this trail.
8. Go underground at Warsaw Caves near Birch Bend Cottage Resort

For something truly different, Birch Bend Cottage Resort is located near Warsaw Caves Conservation Area. Here you can go underground and explore seven limestone caves that were formed thousands of years ago. One of them (Cave 4) stays 2 degree Celsius all year round!
For this adventure leave the flip flops or sandals back at the resort. You’ll need a good pair of running shoes or hiking boots to ensure you have good footing on the rock surface. Be sure to bring a headlamp or flashlight too for navigating the dark. You’ll find a great on-line guide for traversing through the caves on the Conservation Area’s website.
9. Float your cares away near Scotsman’s Point Cottage Resort

Lazy river tubing is the definition of relaxation, and if you stay at Scotsman’s Point Cottage Resort, you’re just minutes away from the perfect tubing spot on the Mississauga River. The slow-moving current makes this a gentle, stress-free activity for all ages.
Just grab a floatie, drop into the water, and let the river carry you along on this 1 km ride. When you reach the bend with the big boulder you’re at the end. Hop out, walk back up the trail, and do it all over again.
To get to the lazy river starting point, drive over to the Kawartha Highlands Signature Park. It’s located just a minute or two north of Buckhorn on County Road 36. If you need a tube or floatie they’re available at The Loft which is a store located next door to the Home Hardware in Buckhorn.
