Take up cross country skiing in the Kawartha Lakes this winter
Are you looking for a fresh way to embrace winter? Why not take up cross country skiing! It’s a fantastic, energizing activity that’ll get you outside enjoying the snow.
In the Kawartha Lakes you’ll find a variety of places to glide along scenic trails. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or a complete beginner, the Kawarthas is an ideal area to pick up your poles and go cross country skiing. Read on to discover everything you need to know about this winter activity.
The benefits of cross country skiing
Cross country skiing is not only fun but incredibly beneficial for your body and mind. This full-body workout targets nearly every muscle group, helping you build strength, improve flexibility, and boost cardiovascular health. The rhythmic, low-impact motion is easy on the joints and suitable for all ages, making it a versatile way to stay active.
Mentally, cross country skiing offers relaxation and rejuvenation. There’s something uniquely peaceful about gliding through the quiet of a snow-covered forest, breathing in the crisp winter air. The natural surroundings help reduce stress and promote mental clarity. Plus, it’s a great thing to do with a spouse, family and friends.
Am I too old to take up cross country skiing?
Absolutely not! One of the great things about cross country skiing is its accessibility across age groups. As mentioned above, unlike high-impact sports, it’s gentle on joints and muscles, making it a suitable choice for older adults as well.
Many people well into their senior years have embraced this sport for its balance of exercise, mental well-being, fresh air, and the opportunity to stay active through winter.
Plus, with the range of trails available in the Kawartha Lakes you can find one that fits your pace and fitness level, ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience regardless of age.
Why people are drawn to cross country skiing vs. other winter activities
Many people are attracted to cross country skiing for the tranquility and simplicity it offers compared to high-adrenaline winter sports like downhill skiing or snowboarding. Unlike downhill skiing, it allows you to move at your own pace and enjoy the scenery around you. It’s an activity you can do almost anywhere too as long as there is snow and suitable terrain, making it highly accessible.
What equipment will I need?
To start cross country skiing, you’ll need skis, poles, and boots designed for cross country terrain. Skis for beginners can cost between $100 to $300, boots generally range from $100 to $200, and poles around $30 to $80.
As for clothing, a winter coat and snow pants that keep you warm without restricting movement are ideal. Dress in layers for added warmth, and if possible wear a moisture-wicking shirt as your base layer to draw away any sweat from your skin. A neck warmer is well worth the investment too and whatever gloves you wear make sure they make it easy to grip your poles while keeping your fingers warm. Top off your outfit with a toque to keep your head toasty.
Save on cross country ski equipment by buying used
If you’re looking to save, consider buying used equipment on platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji, or at ski swaps. Many people sell gently used cross country gear at a fraction of the retail cost. With a bit of searching, you can often find quality items in good condition. Going this route allows you to enjoy the sport without the initial expense of buying brand-new equipment.
